TERMINAL AUTOMATION SYSTEM

The Customer

  • Power, gas and water utilities
  • Process industries such as pulp and paper, metal and mining, chemicals and pharmaceuticals
  • Manufacturing and consumer industries such as car manufacturers and food and beverage companies

Terminal Automation System

ABB automated the marketing terminals of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) at Vijayawada and Rajahmundry. The marketing terminals have product storage and tank truck loading facilities for product dispensing at both locations. The products handled are Motor Spirit (MS), Superior Kerosene Oil (SKO), High Speed Diesel (HSD) and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). The most vital operations in the terminals are:

  • Product Receipt
  • Product Storage
  • Product Loading
Apart from these operational areas, there are other procedural service requirements such as stock control, terminal security, maintenance, etc. The Terminal Automation System (TAS) was implemented to assure safe, efficient and pilferage-free operation. TAS encompasses loading rack controls, flow metering and control, tank farm management, plant control and operation of product loading pumps and motorized valves, computerized procedural services and the Managerial Information System. An average of three hundred (300) trucks per day are treated.

The primary responsibility of TAS is to ensure that product loading at the terminal facilities takes place in a secure, orderly, timely and well-documented manner. TAS performs the following functions:

  • Validate terminal entry and exit for tank truck loading
  • Control loading at loading bays/points, using Flow Control Units and Card Readers
  • Record and store truck loading information
  • Log events and generate alarms
  • Provide terminal operator access to the system
  • Provide multiple levels of security for access to TAS
  • Poll the Tank Farm Management system

ABB required modifications to the terminal configurations. This included the addition of tanks, bays, products, arms, and flow control units, and the modification of card readers and the bay configurations. ABB outsourced the study, development and implementation to i3.
